Community meeting: Former Shedd Elementary School - TONIGHT

Just saw this today via Concerned Citizens of Chatham. How many you already know about this? This meeting is with regards to the shuttered Shedd School property.

This meeting is happening tonight at Harlan Community Academy High School - 9652 S. Michigan between 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

 Let's get away from government & politics for a moment given that this is a blog that is an homage to my grammar (elementary) school alumnus. Who knew that there was a soon to come all-class reunion for Bennett-Shedd School.

Check out this group on Facebook for more info on this reunion. Mark your calendars.

Perhaps the alumni of the Pride (or I prefer Badgers) took an idea from Harlan Alumni who hold an all-class reunion every year themselves.

With this said since this will be coming next year - mark your calendars NOW!

Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports to host largest HBCU Week

 Found out about this on our local ABC affiliate. So I decided to google it to find out more via ClickOrlando.com:

Walt Disney World’s ESPN Wide World of Sport Complex is set to host HBCU Week for the first time beginning next month.

HBCU Week’s mission is to encourage high-school aged students to enroll into historically Black colleges and universities.

Beginning Oct. 6, an estimated 5,000 students and their families will get the chance to check out an exciting college fair, concerts and comedy shows, an epic “Battle of the Bands” event and enjoy a parade at Magic Kingdom. This is the first time in its five-year history that the HBCU Week Foundation is hosting its annual event at Walt Disney World Resort, which is expanding the foundation’s ability to stage new and more high-profile activities for its attendees.

“We are pleased to share in the mission to highlight the rich history and cultural significance of HBCUs, creating educational and, ultimately, career opportunities for students,” said HBCU Week Founder and CEO Ashley Christopher. “Hosting this national event at Walt Disney World Resort helps amplify the mission of HBCU Week, attracting more parents and students throughout the country to our events and helps make an even greater impact in fostering opportunities for thousands of students.”

I'd say if done for the right reasons, this isn't a bad trend. Perhaps other corporations could host events such as this in the future. 

WGN: ‘One Illinois’ theme of post-COVID-19 state fairs in August

 

[VIDEO] One aspect of my Springfield Project would likely include the Illinois State Fair in Springfield which thankfully will take place this year. There wasn't one last year because of the pandemic and I like the theme of One Illinois as announced in this report from WGN.

Illinois is a huge state and there's a lot more to the Land of Lincoln than Chicago or the Chicago area. There have been Republican proposals downstate to spin off the City of Chicago or even Cook County into its own state. It seems that's how deep the divide could be on occasion.

One way to look at this is how often do Chicagoans go into other parts of the state? How often do Chicagoans even go to Springfield to visit?

With this said I don't plan to visit the State Fair this year, however, next year is an election year. Both Republicans and Democrats will have their own rallies at the State Fair. It would be interesting what political stories come out from the Springfield Fair in 2022.

Today's Chicago Football Classic

[VIDEO] I wanted to do a more extensive post on the Chicago Football Classic that takes place today at Soldier Field. According to the clock for the official website by the time I post this it will be at least one hour (kickoff 3:30 P.M.) before today's game. This year is between Virginia's Hampton University & D.C.'s Howard University.

Over the years this classic is played is often between two of this nation's Historically Black College's such as Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, Jackson State University (alma mater of the late Walter Payton), Alcorn State University, Mississippi Valley State University, Grambling University, etc. Often there will be a college fair for high school seniors before this event.

I would like to update you on the game when I find out about the results.

Success of the 2019 Illinois State Fair

[VIDEO] The Illinois Channel interviews Illinois State Fair Manager Kevin Gordon with regards to the success of this years state fair. I've talked about the success of this years fair on this blog during the course of last month. Also note that the IL Channel's YouTube channel showed other events from this year's fair particularly the more political events that took place at the fairgrounds in Springfield.

As an aside the other state fair in DuQuoin, Illinois also did very well this year according to a post from The Capitol Fax blog.

Attendance for the IL State Fair up from last year #twill

Until just on Friday I never really paid attention to whether or not attendance at the Illinois State Fair is up or down. Most of the comments at CapFax noted that it helps to attract people to the state fair if this state's leadership doesn't spend a lot of time bad-mouthing Illinois. Good point.

Perhaps I should begin to make some plans for next year's state fair and document it for the audience here.

I also found this tweet from Rich Miller's twitter feed about the DuQoin State Fair. Who knew this state had two state fairs?

How many really appreciate that Illinois is truly a large state with a number of regions including the Chicago area. It's so large there are some people who are in the General Assembly - and mostly Republican sadly - who want to make Chicago the 51st state.

Ever visit the Illinois State Fair?

I wanted an excuse to talk about the Illinois State Fair and possibly visiting our state capitol in Springfield, Illinois.

Having followed Illinois politics since at least my college years I've always been curious about our political leaders doing state business down there in Springfield. While my interest tends to wax and wane over the years one of the things I would like to do is witness a session of the Illinois General Assembly (both house and Senate).

Another thing worth doing is talking a trip to Springfield to check out the Illinois state fair. Of course while the purpose of the fair is mainly agricultural, it has a very political importance as it's often covered by Rich Miller of the Capitol Fax. Here's a recent article on his blog regarding the spelling issues when the state fair is being promoted.

Back to school for ADULTS

Want to do a Pullman strike tour?

I was awfully slow in sharing this. On July 13, 2019 there was a tour in Pullman related to the 125th anniversary of the Great Strike of 1894 and there are more scheduled through October. I believe this strike caused the President of the time a man by the name of Grover Cleveland to sent federal forces to end it.

I found out about this event through Curbed Chicago earlier this month, however, all I did was retweet this information. It would've been cool for me to take part in this as I know more about Pullman's story and architecture, but very little of some of the labor drama that took place there.

According to the above link:

Labor history tends to get short shrift in history books.

The Pullman National Monument Preservation Society, created by Barack Obama’s presidential proclamation in 2015, is trying to change that. During the Great Pullman Strike’s 125th anniversary, the group is giving guided tours each month through October.

The next tour is scheduled for July 13 at noon. Admission is $25, and each ticket includes post-tour reception and dessert.

WTTW has more on the history of this strike in 1894 with regards to the perfect company town that was Pullman.

Future Ald. Beale town halls #Ward09 #BuildingwithBeale

Ooops, I've done pretty badly with Ald. Anthony Beale's town halls having only attended two in recent years. So here are a list of remaining meetings for the rest of the year with a break in August and of course taking a break for the rest of the year after October.

Unlike former 6th Ward Ald. Fredrenna Lyle his office doesn't seem to announce who'll be speaking before hand. However he does have various officials with city government and some people from the community talking about what they're doing for their neighborhoods. It's worthwhile to come pay a visit. Of course he'll have his ward superintendent which was formerly Nicholas Smith who's now a state representative give updates from the streets and sanitation side.

The two times I attended a former police officer talked about utilizing local high school students to help paint murals. Another time representatives from the Chicago Transit Authority gave us an update on the future red line extension. Like I said these are worthwhile meetings to attend.

All of Ald. Beale's town halls or community meetings are held every 4th Tuesday starting at 6:30 PM at the Pullman Presbyterian Church 550 E. 103rd Street. Call his office at (773) 785-1100

BTW, I have to admit that I liked the branding the office seemed to have started "town halls" as opposed to "community meetings". Perhaps I'm being a tad nit-picky, but as far as an event discussing ward issues I just like town hall better than a community meeting. Anyway just my two cents that no one asked for... :P
