The rumors were ongoing with this. Some earlier reports had Joe Biden dropping out of the 2024 race on Sunday (yesterday). However, it seemed as if the President was going to stay in this thing.
And then I saw this on Instagram yesterday.
And then on X - formerly known as Twitter - we see Biden's statement.
As of now it looks like the Democrats will fall in behind VP Kamala Harris. Just remember that in 2020 her own campaign for President went down big time in flames before the Iowa caucus. She's also not very popular though not as far underwater as her President Joe Biden.
Regardless, for primarily campaign infrastructure reasons I think VP Harris will likely be at the top of the ticket in 2024 now that Biden finally bowed out. Now the next question is who would she choose as her running mate.
One possibility is IL Gov. JB Pritzker although the eye is really on him to be the next Democrat nominee for President. And conventional wisdom for a possible VP pick is that she needs to choose a midwestern, moderate running mate.
Chances are it won't be another woman so that rules out Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and I'm not sure she's a great pick anyway. Kentucky Gov. Andy Breshear - a Democrat governor in a red state could be a great pick. Then the newly minted Governor of Pennsylvania Josh Shapiro would be another great pick and especially since the Keystone State is considered something of a battleground state.
Pennsylvania helped Donald Trump secure the Presidency in 2016.
And let's play the race & gender card. The potential running mate will likely be a white male. Probably just the reality of the situation. As far as gender I'm sure Harris would play this card in any possible debate with Donald Trump. She has a bit of a history of this in her debates with not only Joe Biden also with VP Mike Pence in their 2020 debate.
Regardless we shall see how things shake out at the Democratic Nat'l Convention which is set to take place in Chicago in less than a month starting August 19, 2024.
